Exploring Oz in Style

Monthly Archives: December 2013

We had pre-booked into a caravan park at Airlie Beach for 3 nights so we decided we needed an early start to get there before 5pm.  As I had a photographer friend in Townsville who I wanted to catch up with, we would need all the time we could get on the road. Before we left though, this pretty rainbow sent us on our way. Once again, the mountains were covered in… Read More

On the way into Cairns, we took a detour to Kuranda and enjoyed a little time there wandering around, having an ice-cream and buying some ‘relaxed’ clothing for me.  Yes, I relented and purchased some ‘happy pants’ which are rather ‘way out’ for me.  But, oh they are comfortable. Situated only 25km NW of Cairns, Kuranda is accessible by car, sky rail or the Scenic Railway.  We’ve been up on the train a… Read More

The time has come to start heading towards home.  My personal reflections so far? Nindigully Pub was an absolute highlight for both of us. I very much enjoyed the journey to my home town of Dirranbandi and meeting up with Anne Young of Begonia Station.  Seeing all the buildings that Dad used to work in and sleep in really bought a tear to my eye and I’ve since shown Dad some of… Read More

Before I start this post, I thought I’d give the Facebook page associated with this blog a shameless plug 🙂  I know I have lots of people who like my posts, so why not head over to the Facebook page and give me a ‘like’ – http://www.facebook.com/exploringozinstyle. I am also in the process of creating a website which will feature the best of the photos seen on this blog.  More on that… Read More

Well, this iconic hotel deserves it’s own post.  I was so looking forward to coming here and I was not disappointed.  This whole area was so much fun.  Not just the hotel, but the camping grounds were great and we did a day trip up to Cooktown and Archer’s Point (more on that in the next post). Built in 1875 on the banks of the Little Anninan River, the Lion’s Den Hotel is… Read More

After a walk to the Lake again for Pepe to let off some steam, we packed up and headed to the Lions Den Hotel.  I was excited by the prospect of the drive and what scenery I would see.  Damian has seen all this as he worked and lived up in FNQ for some years, but I’m new to it. We stopped briefly in Mareeba for some supplies.  I was desperate for… Read More

We decided to head to Lake Tinaroo for the night before heading up to the Lions Den Hotel.  The landscape has changed dramatically from out west and there is loads of green either side of the road now.  Green trees, fields of sugar cane or whatnot. Roadworks still continue along the roads.  Most are still in recovery from the last floods. There was an abundance of termite hills everywhere we drove but… Read More

After visiting the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton, we headed off towards Charters Towers where we  intended to spend 3 nights.  We wanted some R&R so Damian could rest from driving every day and we could let Pepe take a break from being cooped up in the car every day.  After all, we are on holiday. Each day has been the same with skies the colour of the Australian summer – deep… Read More

We had visited the Stockman’s Hall of Fame this morning knowing that it was only a short journey to Winton.  By the time we left Longreach, it mush have been almost lunchtime. The road to Winton was really not much different.  Still desolate, parched earth waiting for the rains to flood the plains and deliver much needed water to the water table below. We pulled into Winton and went to the caravan… Read More

I don’t know what I can say about the amazing piece of architecture and museum known as the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame.  What started as a germ of an idea of Mr Hugh Sawrey became a reality with the help of icons like RM Williams and other Australians.  Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988, the Hall of Fame houses 5 different galleries dedicated to stories of the untold heroes of the… Read More
